‎Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has called on traditional rulers across the state to spearhead environmental protection efforts and mobilize their communities against flooding and ecological degradation.
‎
‎The governor made the appeal on June 26 during the Anambra State Traditional Rulers’ Council meeting held at the Amphitheatre, Light House, Awka.
‎

‎He emphasized the urgent need for statewide desilting of drainage systems and a complete halt to indiscriminate sand mining, describing both practices as major contributors to flooding and the worsening gully erosion across the state.
‎
‎Gov. Soludo warned that Anambra, with its limited landmass, is approaching a critical environmental tipping point. He noted that the scale of gully erosion has become so severe that even dedicating the state’s entire budget for the next decade would not be enough to completely tackle the problem.
‎

‎He condemned human activities that aggravate environmental degradation, including indiscriminate waste disposal, blockage of drainage channels, construction on natural flood paths, and directing residential runoff onto public roads.
‎
‎Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges, Gov. Soludo stressed that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility that requires strict compliance with environmental regulations.
‎

‎He urged traditional rulers to intensify public awareness campaigns, ensure drainage channels in their communities remain free of blockages, and encourage residents to adopt environmentally responsible practices.
‎
‎Gov. Soludo assured Ndi Anambra that his administration would continue implementing measures to mitigate environmental threats, safeguard lives and property, and preserve the state’s ecosystem for both present and future generations.
