As the world marks the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Anambra State Government has highlighted Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s efforts to combat substance abuse and illegal drug trafficking through enforcement, prevention, rehabilitation and community engagement.
Since taking office, Soludo has pursued a broad strategy that combines support for law enforcement, public education, youth focused interventions, rehabilitation and grassroots participation. A key part of this effort is the state’s partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) through the Anambra State Drug Control Committee.
The collaboration targets drug abuse, trafficking, and the production of dangerous substances such as methamphetamine, known locally as “Mkpụrụmmiri.” The government has also backed demand reduction and enforcement efforts to strengthen agencies on the front line.
NDLEA officials say the support has helped their operations. Between 2023 and 2024, the agency seized more than 2.8 tonnes of illicit drugs, arrested hundreds of suspects and prosecuted nearly 200 offenders.
The administration has also stepped up awareness campaigns in schools, communities and Local Government Areas(LGA), working with traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups and other stakeholders to educate residents on the dangers of drug abuse.
To address addiction as both a health and security issue, the government has approved plans for a rehabilitation centre in Nibo, Awka South, to support treatment and reintegration. It has also expanded school based drug education in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the NDLEA.
At the grassroots, town unions, traditional institutions, local security outfits and community leaders have been mobilized to help identify drug dealers and curb the spread of illicit substances.
While authorities say progress has been made, they stress that sustained collaboration among government, families, schools, communities and civil society is needed to build a safer, healthier Anambra free from drug abuse and trafficking.
