A Professor of Gender and Health Sociology, Department of Sociology/Anthropology, Faculty of Social Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka Campus, Prof. Bentina Mathias, has successfully delivered Unizik’s 114th inaugural lecture titled, “The Dynamics of Womanhood And Nation Building”.
The inaugural lecturer dissected the unquestionable and inalienable rights of women in nation building and the dynamics of womanhood in a patriarchal dominated society.
According to Prof. Mathias an advocate of neo-liberalism which anchors on what people can offer to the society irrespective of gender, women should arm themselves with relevant and profitable skills that will erase their marginalization to contribute to nation building.
She listed some tips on how to harness the potentials in the girl child to include providing for her basic needs, appreciating her beauty, providing her with quality education and projecting her star qualities.
The inaugural lecturer urged women to liberate themselves from the shackles of being benched as kitchen managers and nailed to over financial dependent on their spouses, but as a matter of routine with their acquired skills, prepare their meals before their return from work.
In all, Prof. Mathias affirmed that women’s education must not only end in the kitchen, but should be supported with acquired skills to contribute to home and nation building.
The Acting Vice Chancellor of Unizik Prof. Carol Arinze- Umobi represented by the Unizik Director of the Inaugural Lecture Series, Prof. Josephat Ogbuagu, eulogized the inaugural lecturer for doing great justice to the lecture and educating her wider audience on the dynamics of womanhood and nation building.
Highlights on the occasion was the decoration of the 114th lecturer by the acting Vice Chancellor’s representative, Prof.Ogbuagu.
