PROF. AKUJOBI SUCCESSFULLY DELIVERS UNIZIK’S 125TH INAUGURAL LECTURE

A Professor of Clinical Microbiology, Faculty of Bio- Clinical Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Prof. Comfort Nne Akujobi is disturbed about the alarming rate of mortality and medical emergencies occasioned by the misuse of antimicrobials in the society.
The cardinal message in Unizik’s 125th Inaugural Lecture delivered by her reads,”Stop The Misuse Of Antimicrobials Now To Secure The Future ‘.
Leveraging on her inaugural lecture topic, “Who Is Winning The Antimicrobials Resistance War: Man Or Microbes?’ Prof. Akujobi warned that misuse of antimicrobials has far reaching negative consequences.
She said that Malaria and Typhoid diseases are over diagnosed and the under use of their treatment drugs leads to resistance.
To this end, the academic advised people to visit their doctors when they notice symptoms of illness to get properly diagnosed and treated.
Prof. Akujobi urged that all prescribed drugs must be completed to avoid drugs resistance to the illness the drugs wete being taken for.
The Professor of Clinical Microbiology warned against self medication and the avoidance of the use of antimicrobials for the treatment of common cold.
Prof. Akujobi advised people to adhere strictly to the correct use of hand washing techniques and demonstrated 10 practical steps to take to perfect the art.
She recommended that hospitals management must stick to safety standards in their acceptance and distribution of drugs by pharmaceutical drugs manufacturing companies.
In a press statement after the inaugural lecture, the spouse of inaugural lecturer, Mr. Benneth Akujobi commended the wife for masterfully delivering her lecture and used the forum to warn people against the abuse of antibiotics which have far reaching negative consequences.
Some of the dignitaries that graced the occasion include the Vice Chancellor of Unizik Prof. Stanley Ugochukwu Bond Anyaehie, the Chief Medical Director, El-do-rado Multi- Specialist Hospital Awka, and Prof. Chiemelu Emegoakor.
