PDSS, UNDP, ACJMC STRENGTHEN CRIMINAL JUSTICE THROUGH CAPACITY BUILDING

The Police Duty Solicitors Scheme, PDSS, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, and Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee, ACJMC, organized a capacity-building programme in Awka.

The training, held at the Judiciary Town Hall, High Court Complex, Awka, on 30 June, brought together magistrates, police officers, judiciary officials, Nigerian Bar Association members, and duty solicitors to strengthen justice delivery.

Representing the Chief Judge and ACJMC Chairman, Her Worship Vivian Udedike appreciated UNDP, ROLAC, and International IDEA for supporting reforms, emphasizing improved access to justice and protection of fundamental rights.

Speaking for UNDP, Jude Ezeh highlighted the Police Duty Solicitors Scheme’s objectives, stressing police and judicial reforms aimed at enhancing professionalism, accountability, transparency, and public confidence within justice institutions.

Representing the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Senior Advocate Tobechukwu Nweke, Barrister Franklin Akunekwe described the training as vital for promoting professionalism, fairness, and efficient criminal justice administration statewide.

Representing the Commissioner of Police, Deputy Commissioner Mantu Chong reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to institutional reforms, while OC Legal Anayo Nwana highlighted improved protection of suspects’ constitutional rights.

Chairman of the Police Duty Solicitors Scheme, Israel Bernard Onyeka, explained that duty solicitors protect suspects’ rights, facilitate legal representation, prevent unnecessary detention, and promote speedy access to justice.

ACJMC Secretary, Mrs. Rose Okeke, emphasized ethical conduct, confidentiality, professionalism, and timely reporting by duty solicitors, while Her Worship Vivian Udedike stressed accurate documentation and effective programme monitoring responsibilities.

His Worship Dr. Mike Anyadiegwu highlighted key provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, encouraging stakeholders to uphold due process, strengthen justice delivery, and sustain ongoing judicial reforms statewide.
