The Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, has reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to the welfare, inclusion and empowerment of visually impaired persons.
Mrs. Onyekesi gave the assurance when the executive members and representatives of the Nigeria Association of the Blind (NAB), Anambra State Chapter, led by its Chairman, Comrade Okamelu Ernest, paid her a courtesy visit in her office at Women Development Center Awka on Oct.8
The delegation congratulated the Commissioner on her appointment and introduced the Association’s leadership, outlining its mission to empower visually impaired persons and improve their quality of life across the State.
The team also informed the commissioner of preparations for the 2026 International White Cane Day celebration scheduled for October 17.
Responding, Mrs. Onyekesi commended the Association for its resilience and advocacy in promoting the rights and interests of persons with visual impairments.
She emphasised that social welfare interventions must be inclusive and responsive to the needs of vulnerable groups, including persons living with disabilities.
The Commissioner assured the delegation that her Ministry would work closely with the Association to strengthen support systems and promote the dignity, independence and wellbeing of its members.
She noted that sustained collaboration between government and disability-focused organisations was essential to removing barriers and creating opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate fully in society.
The visit highlighted the importance of stronger partnerships in advancing disability inclusion and ensuring that visually impaired persons are not left behind in Anambra State’s structure.
