Some residents and traders in Onitsha have expressed support for the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (Ocha Brigade), describing the allegations contained in a viral voice recording as misleading and unsubstantiated.
In an interview, Elder Christian Madu, resident from Fegge, countered claims of brutality and unlawful detention by sharing his personal encounter with the agency. He disclosed that he was once apprehended for an environmental infraction and was treated with professionalism and respect. “I went to their office, paid the prescribed fine, and left without any form of harassment or intimidation,” adding that the procedure reflected the agency’s standard practice.
Similarly, Hon. Steve Okosa, a trader at Ochanja Market, dismissed the allegations as baseless and attributed the circulation of unverified claims to the misuse of social media. “We live in an era where anyone can make unfounded statements. Some individuals are opposed to the enforcement of law and order. Today it is Ocha Brigade; tomorrow it could be another agency,” he remarked.
Hon. Okosa underscored the importance of government agencies in upholding environmental standards and maintaining public order, urging residents to support their operations rather than discredit them with false allegations.
The respondents further advised the public to verify information before dissemination, cautioning that misinformation could erode public trust and impede the work of institutions charged with sanitation and order in the state.
