The Chairman of Okpoko Fruit and Vegetable Market, Mr. Ngozi Egbeonu, has commended the ongoing sanitation and drainage evacuation exercise in the market, describing it as a vital step toward improving hygiene, preventing flooding, and ensuring a safer environment for traders and customers.
Speaking to journalists at the market on May 18, Mr. Egbeonu said the exercise, which targets blocked drainage channels popularly called sakamori, demonstrates the new market leadership’s commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy business environment. Heavy-duty equipment, including an excavator, was deployed to remove silt, debris, and accumulated waste from the drainage system. Workers also cleared refuse that had obstructed waterways for an extended period.

He stated that the cleanup would continue until all critical drainage channels in and around the market are fully cleared. He urged traders to desist from dumping waste into the drains, stressing that proper sanitation is key to preventing waterborne diseases and protecting goods during the rainy season.
The Chairman also acknowledged Governor Charles Soludo for constructing roads in Okpoko, which have improved access for commuters transporting goods, traders, and customers to the market. He further commended the improved security in the area, noting that both developments have boosted confidence among traders and customers.
He described the market as a peaceful and inclusive Wazobia market where different ethnic groups coexist harmoniously. The chairman appealed to the state government to upgrade the facility into a standard modern market.
Mr. Egbeonu also appreciated the Mayor of Ogbaru Local Government Area, Hon. Sir Kenneth Akwuobi, for visiting the market and engaging with traders, describing the visit as a sign of responsive leadership. The market leader further lauded traditional leaders, including the Sariki of the Hausa community and the Yoruba Kabiyesi, as well as executives and stakeholders for their guidance, advice, and financial support.
Traders welcomed the exercise, noting that blocked drains had previously caused persistent flooding and offensive odours during heavy rainfall. Mr. Moses Okonkwo, a trader, praised the Chairman’s commitment to keeping the market conducive for business, saying, “Cleanliness is next to godliness.” Others described the Chairman as a good leader and encouraged him to sustain the effort.
Appreciation was also extended to Mr. Boniface Egbutu, popularly known as Ogene, for his guidance and support, as well as to the Ogbaru LGA APGA Chairman, Pastor Onochie, for his spiritual encouragement. “We are swimming in success,” the chairman said, expressing optimism about the continued growth and development of the market.
