The Mayor of Njikoka Local Government Area(LGA) of Anambra State, Hon. Dr. Ikechukwu Okakpu, popularly known as OKD Jnr., has celebrated rural women for their contributions to agriculture, food security, family welfare and economic development, pledging his administration’s continued support for their welfare and empowerment.

Okakpu made the commitment in his message marking the 2026 International Day of Rural Women, where he recognised the resilience, hard work and resourcefulness of women who sustain rural economies through farming, food processing, trading and other productive activities.

He noted that the six towns that make up Njikoka Local Government Area have significant agricultural potential, with rural women playing important roles in food production, household sustenance and community development.

The mayor observed that despite their contributions, many rural women continue to face challenges that limit their productivity and economic opportunities, stressing that celebrating their achievements must go hand in hand with practical measures to improve their livelihoods and standard of living.

According to him, his administration remains committed to identifying and addressing the needs of rural women, particularly those engaged in agriculture and other income generating activities, within available resources and its development priorities.

Okakpu emphasised that empowering rural women would not only improve their economic independence but also strengthen families, increase agricultural productivity and contribute to sustainable development across Njikoka.

He called on community leaders, relevant government agencies, agricultural organisations, development partners and other stakeholders to collaborate with the local government in providing opportunities and support that would enable rural women to expand their activities and improve their economic well being.

The mayor maintained that rural women deserve recognition not only for their sacrifices and contributions but also for their essential role in building stronger families and more prosperous communities.

He congratulated rural women in Njikoka and beyond on the occasion, urging them to remain committed to agriculture, family development and community service while assuring them of his administration’s continued interest in their welfare.
