The Anambra State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Barr. Chijioke Oseloka Ojukwu, has emphasized the importance of strict compliance with building regulations, warning that failure to follow due process during construction could endanger lives and property.

Barr. Ojukwu made the remarks on June 12, during the inspection and demolition of a collapsed three-storey building that was still under construction at Umuoma, Umuoji, in Idemili North Local Government Area(LGA).

According to the commissioner, preliminary findings revealed that the collapse resulted from multiple violations of established building standards, citing the absence of approved building permits, non-compliance with setback requirements, inadequate land size for the structure and other regulatory breaches as factors that contributed to the incident.

He noted that adherence to planning laws and professional standards remains essential for ensuring the safety and integrity of buildings across the state.

Barr. Ojukwu disclosed that the ministry is considering stricter enforcement measures, including criminal sanctions against developers who disregard approved construction standards.

“Any building erected without the required permit may be confiscated if it collapses,” he said.

“When people fail to comply with the law, incidents like this occur. Fortunately, no lives were lost in this case.”

The commissioner said that the ministry is reviewing relevant laws to strengthen enforcement, ensuring that offenders are held accountable.

He urged builders, developers and property owners to obtain necessary approvals and engage qualified professionals before embarking on construction projects.

Speaking on the ongoing urban renewal efforts of the state government, Barr. Ojukwu highlighted key projects under the Nnewi Urban Regeneration Plan, including the development of a centralized bus terminal, a modern food market, recreational facilities and the completion of an abandoned shopping mall.

The inspection visit culminated in the demolition of the collapsed structure with the aid of an excavator, as part of measures to safeguard residents and prevent further hazards.
