A book titled “Oge Ndi Igbo”, a collection of Igbo customs and heritage, stories, music, proverbs and traditional wisdom, authored by Mazi Nonso Egwuchukwu, is set to be unveiled on November 21, 2026, in Lagos.
Speaking in an interview in Lagos on November 4, Egwuchukwu, who hails from Nnewi in Anambra State, said the book was inspired by growing concerns over the gradual decline of the Igbo language. He noted that the publication would serve as a platform for preserving, promoting and documenting the language.
He explained that “Oge Ndi Igbo”, which refers to the gathering of Igbo people, is founded on the belief that every gathering presents an opportunity to celebrate and promote the Igbo language. He emphasised that whether at marketplaces, meetings or social gatherings, Igbo people should embrace their language and communicate in it.
Egwuchukwu said his passion for the Igbo language and culture was the driving force behind the book, stressing that losing one’s language amounts to losing an essential part of one’s identity.
The author also highlighted the important role parents and guardians play in passing the Igbo language on to their children. He urged parents to encourage enrolment in Igbo language schools and support initiatives that promote the teaching of the language and Igbo culture, particularly in diaspora communities.
Egwuchukwu stressed that preserving the Igbo language is a collective responsibility. He added that through “Oge Ndi Igbo”, he hopes to rekindle interest in the mother tongue and encourage individuals, families and communities of Igbo extraction to take practical steps towards ensuring that the language remains alive for generations to come.
