The Mayor of Onitsha North Local Government Area, Mr. Nweze Tony Nwora, has expressed satisfaction with the progress of the ongoing regeneration of Onitsha Main Market.

Nwora made this known on Aug. 6, after accompanying Governor Chukwuma Soludo on an inspection of the redevelopment project at the market.

He said the pace of work reflected the state government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and creating a more conducive environment for traders and residents.

“What we witnessed today is clear evidence that the Governor’s vision is gradually becoming a reality.

“Construction is progressing steadily, with modern toilet facilities, six boreholes, improved access roads and other essential infrastructure that will make Onitsha Main Market cleaner, safer and more organised,” he said.

The mayor described the project as a practical intervention that would enhance commercial activities in the market, assuring traders of the council’s continued support.

During the inspection, Soludo toured various sections of the market to assess the quality and progress of work and interacted with traders.

Some traders expressed satisfaction with the progress of the project and said they looked forward to its completion ahead of the December 2026 festive trading season.

The regeneration project is expected to provide improved sanitation facilities, enhanced security, better drainage systems, upgraded road networks and a more organised trading environment.

Soludo reiterated the state government’s determination to restore order within and around the market upon completion of the project.

He said the government would enforce regulations against street trading and the indiscriminate occupation of roads and walkways around the market to ensure the free movement of people and vehicles.

The governor said the measures would also improve safety and help reposition the market as a major commercial centre.

The inspection formed part of the state government’s monitoring of major infrastructure projects aimed at revitalising public facilities and improving the business environment in Anambra.
