The Mayor of Onitsha North Local Government Area, Hon. Nweze Tony Nwora, has underscored the importance of structured agricultural systems in driving economic growth, following a study visit to Shuangfeng County in China.
Nwora, who was part of a delegation from Onitsha North, shared insights from the visit in a statement, describing the Chinese agricultural model as highly coordinated and efficiency-driven.
“We observed a system where agriculture is deliberately organized for productivity, from greenhouse cultivation to mechanised farming and structured planting processes,” he said.
According to him, a key takeaway from the visit was the integration of the agricultural value chain, where production, processing, and market access are closely linked.
“What stood out was the level of coordination. Farmers are not left on their own; they are supported through systems that connect what they produce to processing and ultimately to the market,” Nwora noted.
He explained that such an approach ensures consistency in quality, reduces waste, and enhances overall output, making agriculture a viable engine for economic development.
Reflecting on the implications for Onitsha North, Nwora said the focus would be on adapting similar models to local realities.
“Agriculture, when properly structured, can move beyond subsistence and become a strong driver of growth. The task before us is to see how these practical models can be adapted to strengthen our food systems and create opportunities for our people,” he stated.
He added that the lessons from the visit could support efforts to boost local enterprise, improve food security, and expand employment opportunities within the area.
The China engagement forms part of broader efforts by the local government to explore innovative approaches to development and apply global best practices at the grassroots level.
