The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, has urged journalists in the state to prioritise professionalism, ethical reporting, and active participation in union activities.

Dr. Odogwu gave the charge during the August Congress of the council held at the Godwin Ezemo Press Centre, Awka, on August 6.

He stressed that members must take the union seriously and commit themselves fully to its growth and development, describing August as a month of work and progress.

He urged journalists to set the agenda as the fourth estate of the realm, package themselves professionally, and avoid careless public statements. According to him, accurate and priority information should remain the watchword of every journalist, while members should be mindful of the kind of information they disseminate.

The NUJ chairman disclosed that fencing of the union’s premises had commenced and prayed for God’s blessings upon the benefactor supporting the project.
He also directed every chapel chairman to ensure that members attend meetings regularly, noting that such gatherings provide opportunities for members to share challenges, receive support, and seek assistance when faced with difficulties.

In a goodwill message, the Director of the Nigerian Press Council, Mrs. Florence Eziaku Ifewulu, advised journalists to always verify their facts, avoid fake news, and refrain from spreading misinformation.

She emphasised that adherence to ethical standards and responsible journalism would strengthen public confidence in the media profession.

Earlier, a member of the NUJ Anambra State Council, Comrade Ifeanyi Okonkwo, congratulated Professor Chinyere Okunna on her recent Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Anambra Man of the Year (AMTY) Awards, describing the honour as well deserved.

Delivering the vote of thanks on behalf of the council, Comrade Ebele Eze appreciated the guest speaker for taking time to attend the congress and impact valuable knowledge on members.

She assured that the Anambra State Council would continue to partner with the Nigerian Press Council in promoting ethical journalism and professional excellence.
