The Agency for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non Formal Education (AANFE) has received assurance from the office of the Mayor, Nnewi North Local Government Area, Echezona Anazodo of its commitment to promote adult education programmes in the area.
This follows an advocacy visit by a monitoring team from the Agency to the Mayor’s office.
The delegation, led by the the Agency’s Director, Mrs. Ebele Ononihu, was received by the Supervisor for Education Mr. Onyeka Ibeneme and Secretary Nnewi North LGA, Mrs. Amaka Okafor.
Speaking during the visit, Mrs. Ononihu explained the need for intensified sensitization of Adult Education programmes/intervention, specially in communities where participation remained low.
She pinpointed some learning centres that were experiencing classroom challenges as raised by the school authorities which included alleged misuse of chairs and desks by the adult learners.
She appealed to the leadership of the LGA to help engage headmasters to allow facilitators to continue accessi g the learning centres, stressing that such cooperation was needed in other to sustained adult literacy programmes in the area.
The Agency drew attention to the poor stipends currently paid to Adult Education facilitators saying that the situation was affecting service delivery and called on the Mayor to help engage other relevant philanthropists so as to explore ways of reviewing and improving the facilitators welfare.
The supervisor for Education, Mr. Onyeka Ibeneme promised to reactivate the not functioning Adult Education centre at Centerville while assuring the delegation that Nnewi North LGA would work with relevant authorities to strengthen Adult Education and improve learning condition in the area.
