The newly appointed Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua, has officially assumed office, pledging to sustain and surpass the gains already recorded in the state’s education sector through reforms focused on digitalisation, skills acquisition, and improved career guidance for students.

Dr. Ogugua, who resumed duties at the Ministry of Education, State Secretariat Complex, Awka, today, May 19, was received by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Ifeoma Agbaizu, alongside heads of departments and staff members.

Addressing the various heads of department, the commissioner commended ministry staff for their contributions to the growth of education in Anambra State, noting that their efforts have earned the state national recognitions as one of the leading educational hubs in Nigeria.

He assured stakeholders of his commitment to maintaining the momentum already achieved while introducing new strategies aimed at further strengthening the sector.

Dr. Ogugua said his administration would prioritise digital transformation in the ministry, schools and work toward bridging the gap between the Nigerian and Western educational systems to better prepare students for global competitiveness.

Having studied in both systems, he stressed the need to combine the strengths of each in order to give Anambra students broader opportunities and improved learning outcomes.

The commissioner also outlined plans to promote an inclusive education system that incorporates skills acquisition, critical thinking, interactive learning, and practical-based teaching methods to make graduates more employable.

He expressed concern over the lack of proper academic and career guidance for students, describing it as a major factor responsible for frustration and school dropout among undergraduates.

“There is a need for proper guidance for students on subject selection and career paths so they can pursue courses that align with their dreams and abilities,” he said.

Dr. Ogugua further said that his administration would invest in continuous teacher training and professional development to ensure that students in the state remain among the best in the country and can compete favourably with their counterparts globally.

He urged heads of departments and staff of the ministry to work closely with him in advancing the state’s education agenda, stressing that the success of the sector would benefit all stakeholders.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ifeoma Agbaizu, welcomed the commissioner and assured him of the ministry’s full support in achieving his vision for the education sector.

The event also featured an inspection tour of the ministry by Dr. Ogugua, during which he interacted with staff across various departments.
