‎The Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum (NBAWF), Anambra State Chapter, on October 17, organised a cancer awareness walk in Awka to promote early detection, regular medical screening and healthy living.
‎
‎The walk began at the NBA premises in Awka, proceeded through Quarter Junction and ended at Solution Fun City, Awka. The exercise was part of the forum’s efforts to sensitise the public to cancer prevention, the importance of early diagnosis and the adoption of healthy lifestyles.
‎

‎Speaking to journalists, Chairman of the NBA Awka Branch, Barr. Nnamdi Raphael Anagor, said the walk was organised as part of activities marking Cancer Awareness Week, which commenced with health talks and lectures. He explained that the initiative was designed to educate the public on cancer and encourage individuals to take proactive steps towards protecting their health.
‎

‎Anagor highlighted the need for increased awareness of prostate cancer among men, noting that dietary patterns, lifestyle choices and genetic predisposition could influence cancer risks. He advised men aged 40 and above to seek medical advice and undergo regular examinations, depending on their individual health needs.
‎
‎He also underscored the importance of physical activity in maintaining good health and potentially reducing the risk of certain cancers. He urged both men and women to incorporate regular walking and other forms of exercise into their daily routines.
‎

‎Similarly, Facilitator of the NBA Women Forum, Awka Branch, Barr. Obianuju Nwakpadolu, said the awareness walk was aimed at educating the public on cancer prevention and the benefits of early detection. She stressed that regular medical check-ups were particularly important for lawyers to maintain their well-being and remain productive in their professional careers.
‎
‎Nwakpadolu identified prostate and colon cancers as significant health concerns among men, while drawing attention to breast and cervical cancers affecting women. She encouraged women, particularly those aged 35 to 40 and above, to prioritise regular medical examinations and breast self-awareness, urging them to seek prompt medical attention whenever they noticed unusual lumps or other changes.
‎
‎On cervical cancer prevention, she advised sexually active women to undergo appropriate screening and consult healthcare professionals about human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. She noted that preventive measures and early diagnosis could help reduce cancer-related risks and improve treatment outcomes, adding that regular physical activity also contributes to overall mental and physical well-being.
‎
‎Nwakpadolu further announced that the forum would conduct free cervical cancer screening for female lawyers across the NBA on October 24. She called on the government to expand access to HPV vaccines and make cervical cancer screening services, including Pap smear tests, available at subsidised rates.
‎
‎The event also featured free medical checks for participants, including blood pressure and blood sugar tests. The exercise reinforced the forum’s advocacy for routine health examinations, increased cancer awareness, early detection and the adoption of healthier lifestyles.
