The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Anambra State Chapter, has joined the rest of the world in commemorating the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child, celebrated annually on October 11.

The United Nations set aside the day to recognize and promote the rights of girls across the world, as well as to draw attention to challenges that hinder their total development and wellbeing.

In a statement issued by the Chairperson of NAWOJ, Anambra State Chapter, Comrade Tochukwu Ifejika, the association celebrated every girl child for her resilience, courage, and leadership potential, particularly in the face of social and economic challenges.

This year’s celebration, themed “The Girl I Am, the Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontline of Crisis,” underscores the strength and determination of girls who continue to champion positive change even in difficult circumstances.

According to Ifejika, NAWOJ aligns strongly with the objectives of the day, which resonate deeply with the group’s mission of advancing the rights, dignity, and empowerment of women and girls.

“We salute every girl child for the woman she is becoming despite uncertainties, hardships, and crises. We identify with every girl making womanhood proud in various fields of endeavour,” she stated.
“We also encourage those currently overwhelmed by challenges to look inward and draw on the resilient spirit that lies within every girl.”

She further called on government at all levels, religious institutions, schools, NGOs, and families to create an enabling environment that promotes the holistic development of the girl child, empowering her to lead meaningful change in society.

NAWOJ reaffirmed its commitment to continued advocacy for the protection and empowerment of girls, urging stakeholders to take deliberate actions that will ensure equal opportunities and safety for every girl child in Anambra State and beyond.
