‎The Anambra State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development on June 16, convened a stakeholders’ engagement with professionals in the built environment sector to deliberate on measures aimed at repositioning the construction industry, strengthening professional standards, and eliminating quackery.
‎
‎Addressing participants at the meeting, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Barr. Chijioke Ojukwu, underscored the indispensable role of qualified professionals in the effective implementation of physical planning and urban development initiatives. He noted that sustainable urban growth and orderly development can only be achieved through the active involvement of competent and duly certified practitioners.
‎
‎The commissioner expressed concern over the increasing presence of unqualified individuals within the construction industry in Anambra State and across the country. He observed that such individuals often gain access to critical stages of the building construction value chain and secure contracts despite lacking the requisite qualifications, a situation he linked to cases of structural failures and other avoidable incidents within the sector.
‎

‎Barr. Ojukwu emphasized the need for a more coordinated regulatory framework and enhanced enforcement mechanisms to ensure that only qualified and licensed professionals are permitted to practice within the state. According to him, this would promote accountability, improve construction standards, and safeguard lives and property.
‎
‎Speaking on development levy assessments payable to government, the commissioner disclosed that the ministry is working towards introducing a more transparent, accessible, and accountable assessment process. He explained that the initiative is intended to eliminate ambiguities and close loopholes that may encourage corrupt practices.
‎

He noted that stakeholders extensively discussed practical measures for sanitizing the sector and preventing unqualified practitioners from operating within the system.
‎
‎Also speaking, former Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) and retired Deputy Director of the Ministry, Mr. Emma Ifemedebe, highlighted the importance of proper planning as the foundation of development control. He explained that development must be preceded by comprehensive planning processes, which ensure that appropriate structures are situated in suitable locations.
‎
‎He further advocated the adoption of drone technology for monitoring urban development activities, noting that such innovation would strengthen security surveillance and enhance effective urban planning.
‎
‎In her vote of thanks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Barr. Jessie Nwankwo, expressed appreciation to participants for their valuable contributions and professional insights. She assured stakeholders that the recommendations arising from the engagement would be carefully considered as part of ongoing efforts to make Anambra State safer, more orderly, and environmentally sustainable.
