The Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, on Thursday, October 8, 2026, attended the PReP 2.0 Waste Pickers Empowerment and Formalisation Forum organised by TechnoServe in collaboration with the Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) in Awka.

The forum is designed to consolidate community entry, sensitisation, enrollment and technical training, and cluster formation for informal plastic waste collectors in Anambra State. The initiative aims to recruit, activate and formalise collectors to strengthen the plastic recycling value chain, build financial resilience, and foster a safe, inclusive working environment.

Speaking at the event, Dr Mefor commended the Ministry of Environment and its partners for confronting what he described as a major existential threat to the state.
“What you are doing is timely and needed now more than ever before. The environment has constituted itself into a major existential threat to Anambra State, and we have to come together to confront it and save our state and our people. What you are doing is very, very crucial,” he said.

He recalled that a few weeks ago, the Ministry of Information and Value Reformation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Environment on collaboration to tackle environmental challenges.
“I am happy that you are already moving ahead, and the Ministry of Information and Value Reformation will certainly join you. Whatever collaboration you need from us to publicise your activities and to join forces in sensitising and conscientising our people, you can count on us. We are ready,” Mefor assured.
He urged WAPAN and TechnoServe to expand the initiative and enlist more volunteers, noting that by formalising waste pickers and cleaning the environment, they are saving the state and securing its future.
