The Mayor of Idemili South Local Government Area, Hon. Amaka Obi has distributed plantain plums to no fewer than 500 residents and workers through the Sustainable Farming Initiatives Programme. The programme, tagged “Empowering Farmers, Enhancing Livelihoods,” aimed to economically empower households, improve nutrition, and accelerate agro-industrial development in Idemili South.
Hon. Amaka Obi called on residents to join the Sustainable Plantain Farming Initiative, emphasizing that the project will span across all seven communities in the council area.

“The initiative is designed to empower local farmers and residents with hybrid plantain plums, enhancing food security and economic growth in Idemili South,” she stated, urging the beneficiaries to make effective use of the plantains to improve their families’ nutrition and income.
The Head of Department of Agriculture, Mrs. Amaka Ekwelukwa, highlighted that the plantain suckers are hybrid suckers, aligning with the global focus on food and nutrition security. She commended Mayor Amaka Obi for keying into this initiative to ensure a healthy population in Idemili South.
Most of the Idemili South stakeholders present to witness the event were Comrade Innocent Edoziuno, NULGE; Hon. Prince Dozie, Chairman Contacts and Mobilization of APGA Idemili South; and Hon. Ifeanyi Erioubu, Supervisor for Health, extols Mayor Amaka Obi for this initiative, describing it as timely and optimistic to improve food and nutrition, also reduce poverty.

Beneficiaries, including Mr. Ifenna Okafor, Mrs. Okeke Ifeyinwa, and Mrs. Vivian Obika, commended Mayor Amaka Obi for the initiative and pledged their continued support for her success. They expressed gratitude for the empowerment and promised to make effective use of the plantain plums to improve their livelihoods.
With the programme set to benefit all seven communities, residents are optimistic about the positive impact it will have on their lives, and Mayor Amaka Obi’s efforts to boost agricultural development and food security in Idemili South have yielded a great results.
