Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate the International Day of Sign Languages on September 23, recognizing the importance of inclusion, dignity and equal opportunities for persons with hearing impairment.

Sign languages are full natural languages, not mere gestures.
They possess grammar, culture and history, enabling millions of people to communicate, learn, work, worship and maintain meaningful family and social relationships.

In Anambra State, the celebration provides an opportunity to promote greater awareness and inclusion of persons living with hearing and communication challenges, particularly in education, healthcare, employment, public information and social services.

The United Nations recognizes sign language rights as human rights.
Governments and relevant institutions have a responsibility to promote accessible communication, support early learning and ensure that public information reaches everyone without discrimination.

The Anambra State Government, through its people-oriented policies and commitment to building a liveable and prosperous homeland, continues to recognize the importance of inclusion and equal opportunities for all Ndi Anambra.

Schools, hospitals, government offices, media organisations, religious institutions and other public places can contribute to inclusion by encouraging sign-language awareness and improving access to information for persons with hearing impairment.

Parents are also encouraged not to hide or discriminate against children with hearing impairment because of societal stigma. Early communication, education and family support can help children develop confidence, skills and a strong sense of belonging.

As we commemorate the International Day of Sign Languages, Ndi Anambra are encouraged to promote understanding, respect and inclusion, ensuring that every person can participate meaningfully in the development of Anambra State.
