‎The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks, giving eligible Nigerians more time to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
‎

‎In a press release issued in Awka on July 3, the Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, announced that the exercise, initially scheduled to end on July 10, will now close on July 26. The nationwide registration exercise began on August 18, 2025.
‎

‎According to the commission, the decision followed a review of the ongoing exercise and consultations with its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations, and other key stakeholders.
‎

‎INEC said the extension is aimed at ensuring that more eligible Nigerians who are yet to register are captured in the National Register of Voters ahead of future elections, including the 2027 general elections.
‎

‎To further improve access to voter registration, the commission also unveiled a self-service online registration platform for first-time voters. The portal, which will become operational on July 8, will be accessible through cvr.inecnigeria.org and includes a step-by-step guide to assist applicants throughout the registration process.
‎

‎The commission explained that the platform enables eligible Nigerians to complete their registration details online using a mobile phone or computer before visiting designated registration or biometric capture centres for fingerprinting and final verification, as biometric capture cannot be completed remotely.
‎

‎INEC added that the system incorporates identity verification, biometric validation, and backend integrity checks to protect the accuracy and credibility of the National Register of Voters.
‎

‎The commission urged all eligible but unregistered Nigerians to take advantage of the extended registration deadline of July 26, as well as the new online platform, reaffirming its commitment to promoting a credible, inclusive, and technology-driven electoral process.
