Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining the state’s growth and development, while urging Nigerians to take responsibility for building a better nation.
Soludo made the call during an Independence Service held at the Cathedral Church of St. Faith, Awka, on Sept. 27, ahead of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary on October 1. The Governor said Nigeria had made significant progress since independence but noted that much still needed to be done to achieve the country’s full potential.
He urged citizens to contribute positively to national development and become part of the solution to the challenges confronting the country. “Nigeria has made significant progress, but a lot needs to be done, and every citizen has a role to play in building a better country,” he said.

Soludo also expressed sympathy to the family of the schoolchild who recently lost his life in a flood incident in the state, noting that flooding had become increasingly challenging in some parts of Anambra. He identified uncontrolled runoff from residential compounds, failure to desilt drainage channels and deforestation as some of the factors contributing to the worsening flood situation.
The Governor urged residents to keep their surroundings clean, maintain drainage channels and avoid activities capable of obstructing the free flow of water.

On security, Soludo said his administration had strengthened the state’s security architecture and introduced the “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign to encourage residents to promptly report suspicious activities and criminal incidents to security agencies.
Earlier, in a sermon titled “From Bondage to Freedom: God’s Purpose for Nigeria,” the Archbishop of the Province of the Niger, Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, called on Nigerian leaders to use their positions to make meaningful contributions to national development. Ibezim urged leaders to remain accountable to the people and ensure that their policies and actions promote the progress and well-being of the country.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s leadership since independence in 1960, the Archbishop said leaders come and go, stressing that those entrusted with authority should use their time in office to make positive and lasting contributions to the nation.
He also called on Nigerians to work together for the development of the country instead of constantly criticising it, urging citizens to contribute positively to national growth.
The Archbishop encouraged Governor Soludo to sustain his administration’s efforts toward delivering the dividends of democracy to the people, acknowledging the achievements recorded during his first term.
