Idemili South Local Government Area has commenced the evacuation of waste and debris in Ojoto to clear blocked drainages and improve environmental sanitation.
The Mayor of Idemili South, Hon. Oluchukwu Ilogbenu, disclosed this on Oct. 12, while inspecting the exercise, expressing satisfaction with the progress made.
Ilogbenu said the exercise followed an environmental assessment conducted the previous week, during which areas requiring urgent attention were identified.
He commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for declaring a state of emergency on the environment, describing the move as an important step towards tackling environmental degradation.
The mayor said the council would extend the exercise to Alor Nnobi Road and Eke Nnokwa Market in the coming days.
He added that the council would launch a public awareness campaign to promote proper waste disposal, prevent drainage blockages and discourage indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
According to him, measures are also being put in place to sanction environmental offenders and prevent further violations.
Ilogbenu urged residents to support the sanitation drive by disposing of waste properly, stressing that maintaining a clean and healthy environment required collective responsibility.
