As schools resume for the new academic session, the Vice President of the Ichi Development Union (Women Wing), Lagos Branch, Mrs. Chinyere Chukwudi, has called for greater involvement of parents and communities in the education and upbringing of children.

Speaking during an interview on September 16, Mrs. Chukwudi said that education should not be seen as the sole responsibility of government and teachers, stressing that parents and communities also had important roles to play in the proper development and training of children.

The Ichi Vice President, who is also a culture ambassador said that Anambra had strong town unions and community associations that could contribute significantly to educational development through scholarships, mentorship, security and school development projects.

She commended teacher recruitment and free education as important steps towards improving access to education but called for greater attention to the quality of learning and school facilities.

According to her, schools, particularly those outside major towns, need well-equipped laboratories, libraries and ICT facilities, as well as functional toilets, water and other basic amenities.

Chukwudi also advocated increased investment in technical and vocational education, career guidance and counselling, saying children should leave school equipped with knowledge, practical skills and a clear sense of direction, rather than examination results alone.

She said that education must evolve beyond examination performance to preparing children for the demands of the future.

“The future requires digital literacy, critical thinking, communication, creativity, financial literacy, entrepreneurship and problem-solving. Our children also need effective career guidance so they can begin to understand their strengths, interests and opportunities from an early age,” she said.

Chukwudi cautioned against preparing children for the global economy at the expense of their cultural identity and values, saying that they could be globally competitive while remaining connected to their roots.
