A nurse at Comprehensive Medical Centre (CMC), Awkuzu, Mrs Ifunanya Nwachukwu, has advised pregnant women to take precautionary measures against excessive heat to protect their health and that of their unborn babies.
She gave the advice during the weekly antenatal care class at the medical centre, where she educated expectant mothers on the potential health risks associated with hot weather during pregnancy and the importance of staying cool and hydrated.
Nwachukwu encouraged the women to drink plenty of clean water to prevent dehydration, wear light and comfortable clothing, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, particularly during the hottest hours of the day.
She advised them to stay in cool, well ventilated environments, get adequate rest and avoid strenuous physical activities under intense heat.
The nurse urged pregnant women to seek prompt medical attention if they experience warning signs such as persistent dizziness, severe headaches, unusual weakness, fainting or other symptoms that cause concern.
She emphasised the importance of attending antenatal appointments regularly, noting that routine medical monitoring helps healthcare professionals assess the health of both mother and baby and provide appropriate guidance throughout pregnancy.
Nwachukwu urged expectant mothers to adopt healthy habits and take weather related precautions seriously, stressing that simple preventive measures could help reduce the risk of heat-related complications and support a healthier pregnancy.
