Residents of Awka, the capital of Anambra State experienced a severe rainstorm on Thursday, marked by strong winds and heavy rainfall which caused widespread disruption and damage in the town.

The storm reportedly blew off rooftops, damaged trees, and destroyed goods belonging to petty traders operating on major roads.

The sudden downpour forced many residents to flee for safety, while traders struggled to salvage their wares, much of which were lost in the chaos.

However, the incident has heightened concerns by the residents following an earlier warning by the Federal Government that at least nine states, including Anambra, could face flooding this year.

Speaking on the development, the Director of Extension Services at the Anambra State Agricultural Development Programme (ADP), Mrs. Isabel Nmadubuchi, described the rainfall as typical of the early rainy season. However, she advised farmers to take advantage of the moisture by planting staple crops such as maize and okra, noting that the current soil condition is suitable for cultivation despite climate variability.

Meanwhile, a resident of Ifite-Awka, Mr. Obinna Chukwuma, urged residents to take preventive measures by clearing drainage systems and gutters to reduce the risk of flooding in line with government warnings.

Authorities are yet to release an official assessment of the damage, but residents remain on alert as the rainy season intensifies.
