The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has called on the Ozo Awka Society to foster enduring peace in Awka, by helping the city recover its former glory and establish it as a modern capital city.
He reaffirmed that Chief Gibson Nwosu remains the recognised Eze Uzu II of Awka, in line with the state’s traditional law, and any contravention will be punished with imprisonment. He went further to assure them of his support to construct a central palace where their crowned traditional rulers can host visitors and conduct official ceremonies.
Gov. Soludo made these remarks during a meeting with the Ozo Awka Society at the ANSEC Chambers, Light House in Awka on May 8.
He highlighted Awka’s rich heritage, with many notable sons and daughters excelling in various fields. “Awka is very special to Anambra and to me, and it pleases God that it will be the State’s Capital. For 34 years, past Governors lived in Amawbia, and during my first campaign, I promised to live in Awka. Today, you see me at Light House.”
“Our goal is to make Awka a vibrant destination, not a transit point. We turned the largest swamp in Awka into Solution Fun City, a very beautiful leisure park; updated the Alex Ekwueme Square; set to transform the Awka City Stadium, and established our Innovation District. The next phase is developing the Awka City Park.
“Now, what is your vision for Awka—are you aiming for a rural village or a modern city? You have a crucial role in promoting lasting peace in your community, especially considering the influence of your Ozo Society in Awka. As a government, we are committed to maintaining law and order, and I will not accept any form of lawlessness,” he said.
He noted that the Imo Awka festival scheduled for May 23 coincides with the state’s primary elections across various wards, where multiple security personnel will be stationed, thereby leading to a shortage of security personnel during the festival, which could jeopardise law and order. He suggested a date adjustment for safety purposes.
On behalf of the Ozo Society, Ozo Sir Chukwujekwu Eze thanked the governor for their meeting and expressed their commitment to community peace, indicating plans for further internal discussions on other issues raised.
Attendees included the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Chiamaka Nnake; the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Chief Ben Nwankwo; and the Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Tobechukwu Nweke.
