Residents of Anambra State have been urged to take precautionary measures following a fresh flood warning issued by the Federal Ministry of Environment, which listed the state among 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) likely to experience flooding between June 22 and July 5 this year.
According to the National Flood Early Warning Centre, forecasted heavy rainfall within the period could trigger flooding in several vulnerable locations across the country. In Anambra, Onitsha Inland Town and the Awka Urban Drainage Corridors were specifically identified as areas at risk.
The warning has heightened the need for residents to support ongoing efforts to prevent flooding by keeping drainage channels free of obstruction, avoiding indiscriminate disposal of waste, and reporting activities that interfere with natural waterways.
Reacting to the development, the Anambra State Ministry of Environment, led by Dr. Clem Aguiyi, reiterated that while heavy rainfall is a natural phenomenon, human activities such as building on waterways, sand-filling wetlands, and blocking drainage systems often worsen flood incidents and their impact on communities.
Dr. Aguiyi, therefore, called on residents to remain vigilant and environmentally responsible as government agencies intensify measures aimed at reducing flood risks across the state.
The appeal aligns with the state’s commitment to building a cleaner, greener and more flood-resilient Anambra through collective action and environmental stewardship.
