The Deputy Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly and Member representing Awka South II Constituency, Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Pius Okoye, has issued an urgent flood safety advisory to residents of Awka South II following persistent heavy rainfall and rising flood threats in parts of the constituency.
In a statement released by his media team today, Sept. 22, Rt. Hon. Okoye advised residents to suspend all unnecessary movements during heavy downpour, noting that floodwaters can rise rapidly, making roads, bridges, drainage channels and low-lying areas extremely dangerous for pedestrians and motorists.
He particularly called on parents, guardians, school proprietors and teachers to exercise maximum caution and ensure the safety of school children, stressing that no child should be allowed to walk through flooded roads or open drainages.
The Deputy Speaker emphasized that the protection of human life must remain the highest priority for all, and urged community leaders and residents to look out for one another, obey safety warnings and avoid flood-affected areas.
He further urged residents to remain indoors during heavy rainfall, adding that safety is a collective responsibility.
