The Catholic Church worldwide marked the first Sunday of May as Father’s Sunday, a celebration that coincides with the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker, the Patron Saint of fathers.

At Annunciation Catholic Parish, Awka, the celebration was observed with great enthusiasm and spiritual devotion. Activities began with a nine-day Rosary novena organized by the Catholic Men Organization (CMO), complemented by the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Members also extended charity by visiting sick colleagues.

Delivering his homily, the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Raph Agbanu, emphasized the centrality of Christ in the life of every believer. He described Jesus as the cornerstone and foundation of life, urging the faithful to remain steadfast in their walk with Him. Citing Proverbs 16:3, he encouraged the congregation to commit their plans to God for success.
“When you follow Christ, you enter into life; when you do not, you enter into darkness. Never fall away from Jesus—walk with Him and walk into life,” he said.

Addressing fathers, Fr. Agbanu described Father’s Sunday as an opportunity for reconciliation and forgiveness within families. He urged fathers and mothers alike to forgive one another and avoid transferring aggression to their children, stressing that love and unity should define every home.

He also prayed for the spiritual renewal of all fathers, asking God to draw back those who may have strayed from Him.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, His Worship Barr. Chukwudi Nwankwo (Akukalia na Mbaukwu), highlighted the vital role fathers play in family life. He pointed to the Holy Family—Jesus, Mary, and Joseph—as a model of unity and responsibility. The Chairman of the Catholic Men Organization, Dr. Laz Okafor (Dikejiamatu), in his welcome address, announced the 2026 theme: “Civic Engagement of Christian Fathers as Agents of Change for Good Governance in Nigeria.” He expressed appreciation to the Parish Priest, parishioners, and CMO members for their contributions to the success of the celebration.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the planning committee, Mr. Emmanuel Anyalebechi, thanked the Parish Priest for his support and commended parishioners for their active participation.

The event featured cultural and religious performances, including presentations by the Holy Childhood Association, Igba Eze dance, and Ojeligbo dance troupe.
Dignitaries present at the event included Engr. Agbili Martin, a Permanent Secretary Ministry of Youth and Sports and Chief Damian Okeke Ogene, ex Deputy President Ohaneze Ndi Igbo among others.
