A renowned university don, Dr. Azubuike Nkala has called on Nigerian journalists to enhance their professional capacity and diversify their income streams to shield their families from the pervasive poverty and “torn coast syndrome” that has long plagued the industry.

Dr. Nkala, a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at Paul University, Awka advised journalists to pursue capacity-building initiatives, such as master’s and doctoral degrees, while still working. This, he believes, will enhance their bargaining power in employment and consulting opportunities, particularly after retirement.

The university don who expressed the concern during the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council’s October Congress, highlighted a disturbing trend where journalists are appreciated only when their stories have a positive impact but face backlash when they speak truth to power.

Speaking on the topic “Beyond the paycheck: finding meaning in retirement through self-improvement and entrepreneurship,” Dr. Nkala noted that this contradictory treatment amounts to a conspiracy against journalists by society.

Dr. Nkala highlighted that the unique challenges faced by journalists vary depending on their territories and socio-economic environments. He pointed out that Anambra State’s low level of urbanization, inadequate infrastructure, and limited economic opportunities create distinct difficulties for journalists operating in the region. Unlike cities like Lagos, New York, London, or those in Western Europe, where advanced technology, better communication facilities, and higher pay have made journalism more manageable, Anambra’s underdeveloped infrastructure poses significant hurdles for journalists.

He noted that media practitioners and journalists in Anambra face significant challenges due to the harsh operating environment and meager remuneration. The socio-economic conditions in the state are equally dire, characterized by inadequate development and limited opportunities, stressing that the eastern gateway is under-reported because of few media organizations and poorly paid journalists.

The Managing Director of Anambra ICT Agency, Mr Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata in his presentation highlighted the significance of internet connectivity in driving the state’s economic growth. According to him, improved internet connectivity has positively impacted Anambra’s GDP and created opportunities for innovators.

Agbata while expressing his support for Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s leadership, acknowledged the state’s progress under his administration. He emphasized the importance of technology in bridging gaps and creating opportunities, noting that journalists who leverage technology tend to excel in their field. To further support this, he announced plans to organize an AI workshop for journalists in Anambra State, aiming to enhance their skills and productivity

The Chief of Staff to former governor, Dr Willie Obiano, Chief Primus Odili, pledged continued support to NUJ while cautioning journalists to be mindful of the information they disseminate to the public. He stressed the importance of accurate reporting, particularly in an election year, to ensure that the public receives reliable information.

Chief Odili commended the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for its achievements in Anambra State, noting that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration has built on this success by driving development across various sectors simultaneously.

He urged journalists to maintain fairness and objectivity in their reporting and evaluation of the government’s activities, ensuring that their assessments are balanced and accurate.

The Anambra NUJ Matriarch, Professor Chinyere Okunna and the Chairman of NUJ, Odogwu Emeka Odogwu PhD in their remarks called on journalists to enhance their skills to boost their bargaining power in the society.
