The absence of a confirmed case of Ebola virus disease in Anambra State, as stated by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, is reassuring. However, it should not lead to complacency but encourage sustained vigilance and preventive action.
The state government’s efforts to intensify disease surveillance, place health workers on alert and mobilise response teams underscore the importance of preparedness in protecting public health and preventing potential outbreaks.
Anambra must sustain these efforts by ensuring that health facilities remain vigilant, health workers receive adequate training, and emergency response systems are regularly assessed for effective disease detection and control.

Public awareness is equally important. Residents should practise regular handwashing with soap and clean water, maintain good personal hygiene, and avoid direct contact with the bodily fluids of suspected Ebola patients.
Families, businesses, schools and markets should maintain clean environments and promote healthy practices. Anyone experiencing symptoms consistent with a suspected infection, particularly after possible exposure, should promptly contact health authorities for guidance.
The government should also ensure that isolation facilities, protective equipment and emergency response mechanisms are adequate to support the effective management of suspected cases.
The media has a responsibility to disseminate verified information from credible health authorities. Rumours, sensational reports and misinformation should be discouraged to prevent unnecessary panic and promote public confidence.
Furthermore, sustained collaboration between the state government, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare providers and other relevant partners is essential for effective surveillance, emergency planning and timely response.
Ultimately, the absence of a confirmed case should be an opportunity to strengthen preparedness, not relax vigilance. Protecting Anambra requires sustained government commitment and public cooperation.
Vigilance today can prevent a crisis tomorrow.
