A Senior Prefect of Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS), Onitsha, Master Melek Chinonso Okafor, has emerged winner of the Catch Them Young Competition organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) for schools in Onitsha North, Onitsha South and Ogbaru Local Government Areas(LGA) of Anambra State.

The competition, held on Oct. 16, at Christ the King College, Onitsha, was designed to promote financial literacy, encourage academic excellence and introduce students to accounting principles and financial management.

Announcing the achievement, the Principal of DMGS, Rev. Chimezie Ogidi, congratulated the winner, describing his success as a source of pride to the school. In his reaction, Master Okafor expressed delight at the victory and thanked God for the achievement.

Meanwhile, the school has commenced its mid-term break, which began on Oct. 17, with students expected to resume on Oct. 24.

Addressing parents ahead of the break, Rev. Ogidi encouraged them to use the period to strengthen family relationships, engage their children in meaningful conversations and provide appropriate guidance and supervision.

He urged students to revise their lessons, complete outstanding assignments and sustain their reading habits throughout the holiday to ensure a smooth return to academic activities.

The Vice Principal, Academics, Mrs. Charity Okoye, appealed to parents to adhere to the school’s visiting arrangements, cautioning that frequent and unnecessary visits during school hours could disrupt students’ concentration and academic activities.

She encouraged parents to work with the school to maintain an environment that supports effective teaching and learning.

For some students, the break offers a welcome opportunity to rest and reconnect with family. A Junior Secondary School One student, Master Great Oduche, expressed excitement about returning home after five weeks in school without seeing his family.

He said the break would allow him to spend quality time with his loved ones, relax and prepare for the next phase of academic activities.

The school management expects students to return on Oct. 24, refreshed and ready to resume their studies with renewed commitment.

Parents and guardians have been encouraged to strike a balance between relaxation, academic revision and discipline to ensure that students make productive use of the holiday.
