The assessment team from ACCIONA, the Spanish engineering firm engaged in the African Development Bank (AfDB) backed Awka Capital City Development Project, continued its inspection tour of Awka on the third day of its visit, combining technical engagements with cultural exploration.

Accompanied by the Managing Director of the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), Dr. Ossy Onuko, the team visited key government institutions and heritage sites to gain a broader understanding of the city’s development potential and unique identity.

The tour began at the Jerome Udoji State Secretariat Complex, where the delegation held strategic discussions with the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mr. Chukwukadibia Okoye, and the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Eddy Ubosi. The team also met with the Special Adviser to the Governor on the Solution Innovation District, Mrs. Chinwe Okoli.

Discussions focused on development data, economic projections, urban growth plans and strategies for integrating smart-city solutions into Awka’s transformation agenda. Conversations with the transport commissioner centered on transportation infrastructure, traffic management and sustainable mobility systems considered essential for a modern capital city.

Beyond the technical engagements, the ACCIONA team explored some of Awka’s most significant cultural and historical landmarks. At the Imo Awka Shrine, they were introduced to aspects of the city’s traditional heritage and spiritual history, gaining insight into the cultural foundations that continue to shape the community.

The delegation also visited the renowned Awka Smiths’ workshop, where generations of blacksmiths have preserved a centuries-old metalworking tradition, observing skilled artisans transform iron into functional and decorative pieces, showcasing a craft that has earned Awka recognition far beyond Anambra State.

The tour concluded at the Awka Museum, where the team viewed collections of historical artifacts, traditional tools and cultural relics that chronicle the evolution of the ancient kingdom and its people.

The visit formed part of ACCIONA’s ongoing assessment of Awka as work progresses on plans to develop a modern, sustainable and globally competitive capital city while preserving its rich cultural heritage.
