The Assistant Controller of Corrections and Officer-in-Charge of the Onitsha Medium Security Custodial Centre, Emmanuel Dede Kanikwu, has paid a courtesy visit to the Archbishop of Onitsha, Valerian Maduka Okeke, in a move aimed at strengthening collaboration between the Nigerian Correctional Service and key community stakeholders.
The visit, held in Onitsha, underscores the provisions of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2022, which emphasizes the need for citizen and institutional partnerships in the reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates.
Speaking during the visit, ACC Kanikwu described the Archbishop as a critical stakeholder whose influence and contributions to society, particularly within custodial centres, remain invaluable.
He noted that the visit was not only to familiarize himself with key figures in the state but also to appreciate the Archbishop’s longstanding humanitarian efforts.

Kanikwu, who also represented the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, commended Archbishop Okeke for his visible impact on the Onitsha Custodial Centre.
He remarked that the Archbishop’s contributions are evident across various aspects of the facility, making him a figure worthy of recognition and collaboration.
As part of the visit, the officer presented an award of recognition to Archbishop Okeke on behalf of the Nigerian Correctional Service, in appreciation of his generosity and sustained support for inmates and correctional initiatives.
In his response, Archbishop Okeke expressed gratitude for the visit and the honour bestowed on him.
He reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s commitment to supporting correctional institutions, noting that Christian teachings emphasize compassion, service, and care for all, including those in custody.
“The Church will continue to support the Service because Christ has taught us to love and assist those in need, including those in prison,” the Archbishop said.
He welcomed ACC Kanikwu to Onitsha and encouraged him to carry out his duties with diligence and integrity.
The Archbishop also assured him of continued cooperation and collaboration for the welfare of both staff and inmates.
As a personal gesture, Archbishop Okeke presented Kanikwu with a copy of his 2026 pastoral letter titled “On Virtue and Capital Sins,” urging him to use it as a guide in his engagement with inmates.
The visit concluded with a photo session, followed by prayers offered by the Archbishop for the success of Kanikwu’s tenure and his impartation of paternal blessings.
