The Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Medical Students Association (COOUMSA), has marked its 2026 Community Health Awareness Week with a free medical outreach program at the Awka South Local Government Secretariat podium.

The initiative featured hepatitis B and C screening, HIV testing, body mass index checks, blood pressure monitoring, and free distribution of long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets, sanitary pads, and medical consultations.

COOUMSA President, Valerian Okoye Akachukwu, expressed gratitude to individuals and stakeholders who made the outreach possible. He acknowledged the support of Awka South Mayor, Prince Chinedu Okafor, and his team, as well as the Deputy Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Okoye.

“Today, our team of doctors from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University is here to provide free medical screening and distribute essential health items to the people of Awka South,” Akachukwu said.

During the event, COOUMSA Coordinator Kenneth Okeke presented an award to the Deputy Speaker in recognition of his sponsorship and commitment to grassroots health awareness.

Responding, Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Okoye urged the medical students to remain focused on their academic pursuits while continuing to serve society through initiatives like the outreach.

The program was widely praised by participants, who described the community health awareness outreach as a timely intervention in promoting preventive healthcare in Awka South.

One of the beneficiaries, Chief Emeka Achaka, a security operative from Mbaukwu in Awka South LGA, expressed appreciation.
“I want to thank the Awka South LGA Mayor and his team for providing the enabling environment and support required for this free medical outreach. I also commend Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Okoye, who has consistently sponsored programs like this for the grassroots. Today, I received drugs and an insecticide-treated mosquito net donated by the Deputy Speaker. He is always passionate about the health concerns of the people, and may God continue to reward him.”

The outreach underscored COOUMSA’s commitment to advancing community health and preventive illness, while strengthening collaboration between medical students and grassroots communities in Awka South.
