The Department of History and International Studies, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam Campus, has donated a first aid box to the institution’s Accident, Emergency and Safety Unit to support emergency response on campus.
The Head of the Department, Dr. Esther N. Okezie, presented the item to the Unit on Sept. 2 at her office in Igbariam.
Dr.Okezie said the gesture was part of efforts to support the establishment of safety points in areas with high student traffic across the campus.
She said the donation was also part of activities leading to the department’s planned luncheon with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, to commemorate the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.
According to her, the 2026 theme of the observance is “Remembering Lives, Promoting Safety.”
Receiving the item, the Head of the Unit, Dr. Afamnedo Godfrey Oguechuo, commended the department for the support.
Oguechuo appealed to other university stakeholders to assist the Unit with first aid materials, fire extinguishers, stretchers, blood pressure monitors and other emergency equipment.
He said additional equipment would enhance the Unit’s capacity to respond promptly to emergencies and promote safety within the university.
The Unit, he added, was also planning to train Student Safety Marshals in collaboration with the Nigerian Red Cross Society.
He said the training would equip the students with basic emergency response skills and enable them to complement the Unit’s safety efforts on campus.
