The Secretary-General of the Ndikelionwu Welfare Association, Lagos Branch, Mr. Chike Uchime, has commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for declaring a State of Emergency on the environment, describing the initiative as a timely step toward improving environmental sanitation across Anambra State.
Speaking in an interview, Uchime said Governor Soludo has consistently demonstrated commitment to environmental sustainability since assuming office through regular sanitation exercises and the desilting of drainage channels to reduce flooding and promote a healthier environment.
He emphasised the important role of traditional rulers, town unions and community leaders in sustaining environmental cleanliness at the grassroots, urging communities to discourage the indiscriminate disposal of refuse into drainage channels, which he described as a major cause of blocked gutters and recurring floods.
According to him, many residents have yet to fully embrace the responsibility of maintaining clean surroundings. He therefore advocated stricter enforcement of environmental sanitation laws, including appropriate sanctions for offenders, to encourage compliance.
Mr. Uchime also called for the establishment of designated waste collection points in communities and urged the government to ensure the regular evacuation of refuse from such locations to improve waste management.
He noted that adopting an efficient waste disposal system similar to those used in many developed countries would enhance environmental sanitation, protect public health and contribute to the creation of cleaner and more sustainable communities across the state.
