May 1st every year is celebrated across the world as May Day, also known as Workers’ Day or International Workers’ Day. It is a special day set aside to recognize the sacrifices, dedication and contributions of workers whose daily efforts keep society moving and economies growing.
It was formed in Paris by the Second international Labour Movement in 1889.
They chose May 1 to commemorate the 1886 Haymarket Affair in Chicago, where workers were striking for an 8-hour workday. Several labour leaders were killed or executed after a bomb was thrown at police.
In Nigeria, Workers’ Day is observed as a public holiday every 1st of May.
Workers remain the backbone of every nation. From teachers shaping the future, health workers saving lives, farmers feeding the people, civil servants driving government policies, traders sustaining commerce, and artisans building communities, every worker deserves honour and appreciation.
In Anambra State, Workers’ Day offers an opportunity to appreciate the workforce under the administration of Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, whose government continues to emphasize productivity, innovation and improved public service delivery. Through ongoing reforms, prompt attention to workers’ welfare, digital transformation, road construction, security enhancement and youth empowerment, the administration is creating a better environment for workers to thrive.
The Solution Government has continued to promote merit, efficiency and professionalism in the civil service while encouraging entrepreneurship and private sector growth. These efforts are helping to build a stronger economy where workers can contribute meaningfully and enjoy the rewards of their labour.
However, May Day is not only for celebration, but also for reflection. It reminds government, employers and society of the need for fair wages, safe working conditions, regular training and respect for workers’ rights. A motivated workforce remains the key to sustainable development.
As Anambra workers join their counterparts across Nigeria to celebrate this year’s Workers’ Day, they are encouraged to remain diligent, disciplined and committed to excellence. With unity between labour unions and government, greater progress can be achieved.
Let us celebrate the hardworking men and women whose sweat builds our state and nation.
Happy Workers’ Day to all Anambra workers.
Together, we move Anambra forward.
