Rural women are essential contributors to food production, family welfare, local enterprise and community development. Their labour, knowledge and resilience help sustain households and strengthen local economies.
The International Day of Rural Women is observed annually on October 15 to recognise rural women’s contributions to agriculture, food security and rural development while drawing attention to the challenges they face.
Across Nigeria, rural women participate in farming, food processing, trading, animal husbandry and other activities that support livelihoods and provide food for families and communities.
In Anambra State, rural women contribute significantly to agricultural production, local markets and small-scale businesses. Their activities support household incomes, preserve local food traditions and contribute to economic growth.
Despite their contributions, many rural women face challenges, including limited access to affordable credit, modern farming equipment, agricultural training, markets and secure land ownership. Addressing these barriers is essential to improving productivity and economic independence.
Government agencies, financial institutions, agricultural organisations and development partners can support rural women through accessible financing, improved agricultural extension services, skills acquisition programmes and better market opportunities.
Families and communities also have a role in promoting women’s participation in decision-making, encouraging girls’ education and ensuring that women receive recognition for their contributions to household and community development.
Empowering rural women can strengthen food security, reduce poverty, improve family welfare and create opportunities for sustainable rural development across Anambra State.
As the world marks this day, Ndi Anambra are encouraged to recognise rural women’s contributions and support initiatives that improve their livelihoods and economic opportunities.
When rural women thrive, families grow stronger, communities prosper and the entire society benefits.
