A visiting Deacon at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Awka, Rev. Raphael Emeh, has urged Christians to uphold the spirit of genuine generosity, stressing that charity should be selfless, sincere, and inclusive.

Delivering his homily during Sunday Mass, on June 28, Rev. Emeh said acts of kindness should not be driven by the expectation of rewards or personal gain but should flow from love, faith, and compassion. He reminded the faithful that God blesses those who give selflessly.

The cleric noted that no matter how wealthy a person becomes, everyone depends on others in one way or another. He therefore urged Christians to respect the dignity of every individual, regardless of social status, emphasizing that generosity goes beyond material gifts to recognizing the worth of others.

Rev. Emeh encouraged the congregation to be attentive to those in need, noting that many people suffer silently and rely on the compassion of others.

Drawing from 2 Kings 4:10, he cited the story of the woman who welcomed the prophet Elisha into her home, explaining that her hospitality attracted God’s blessings. He said the account demonstrates that genuine generosity often opens the door to divine favour.

The Deacon further urged Christians to see charity as a spiritual obligation rather than a social duty, adding that generosity reflects the teachings of Christ and strengthens the Christian community. He also encouraged believers to extend kindness beyond the church by showing compassion in their homes, workplaces, and neighbourhoods.
