Catholics across the world on Sunday commemorated Pentecost Sunday, a significant Christian celebration observed 50 days after Easter, marking the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and early followers of Jesus Christ.

Pentecost, often described as the birth of the Church, also signifies the end of the Easter celebration. The event is remembered for the miraculous outpouring of the Holy Spirit, during which the disciples spoke in different languages while proclaiming the works of God.

Delivering a sermon during the Holy Mass at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Enugu, the Resident Priest, Rev. Fr. Ambrose Ofodile, described the Holy Spirit as the inner nature of God, a friend, ally, and comforter to believers.

Fr. Ofodile explained that the Holy Spirit teaches Christians the secrets of the Kingdom of God and strengthens them in their daily lives, noting that the twelve disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and empowered to preach the Gospel to both Jews and Gentiles.

The cleric further described Pentecost as the “Feast of Weeks,” saying that the Eucharist and the law of the Lord were instituted in the Church through the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Citing Acts 2:1-11, Fr. Ofodile encouraged the congregation to open their hearts to receive the Holy Spirit and remain steadfast in prayer, stressing that the Spirit consoles and encourages believers in difficult situations.

The high point of the celebration was the offering of special prayers for the congregation during the Holy Mass.
