CARDINAL ARINZE URGES HUMILITY, ACCOUNTABILITY IN CHURCH LEADERSHIP

The Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha on Aug. 23, hosted its 2026 Annual Lecture, featuring a profound reflection on clericalism, christian service and leadership within the catholic church.
The lecture, delivered by His Eminence, Francis Cardinal Arinze, was themed “Overcoming Clericalism in Our Time” and attracted clergy, religious and members of the Catholic faithful.
Drawing from his extensive experience in ecclesiastical leadership, Cardinal Arinze offered insights into the challenges posed by clericalism and the need for authentic Christian leadership rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ.
He urged church leaders and the faithful to look beyond titles, positions and authority, emphasising humility, accountability and genuine service as essential attributes of effective christian leadership.
The cardinal also encouraged participants to critically examine their roles and responsibilities within the Church, stressing the importance of servant leadership and placing the mission of Christ above personal interests, status and ambition.
The annual lecture provided an avenue for faith formation, reflection and constructive dialogue on contemporary issues affecting the life and mission of the church.
Participants at the gathering reflected on Cardinal Arinze’s message, particularly his emphasis on humility, responsible leadership and authentic christian service as vital to advancing the mission of the Catholic Church.
