‎The Permanent Secretary, Anambra State Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Mrs. Chinyere Nwabachili, has called on members of staff to actively participate in the state’s upcoming environmental sanitation exercise, describing a clean environment as essential to preventing flooding and safeguarding public health.
‎
‎Mrs. Nwabachili made the appeal on July 2, during a meeting with staff at the ministry’s conference hall in the Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka. She emphasized that maintaining a clean environment is a collective responsibility that requires the commitment of every resident.
‎

‎She reminded staff of the state government’s declaration of a State of Emergency on the Environment, announced on June 29 in response to increasing environmental degradation. She urged them to comply with the movement restriction scheduled from 7:00 to 10:00 a.m. on July 4, by using the period to clear blocked drains, remove refuse and thoroughly clean their surroundings.
‎
‎The permanent secretary cautioned against the indiscriminate disposal of waste into gutters and drainage channels, noting that the practice is a major contributor to flooding in many parts of the state. She explained that blocked drainage systems hinder the free flow of rainwater, exposing lives and property to unnecessary risks.
‎
‎Mrs. Nwabachili further encouraged staff to extend the environmental sanitation message to their families, neighbours and friends, stressing the need for collective action to achieve a cleaner and healthier Anambra.
‎
‎She also assured the workers of her personal participation in the exercise, urging them to wear appropriate clothing, come out in large numbers and lead by example.
‎
‎According to her, the sanitation exercise is not only a government initiative but a shared responsibility aimed at protecting the health, safety and future of all residents of Anambra State.
