Workers in the Awka South Local Government Area have been urged to remain dedicated to their official responsibilities in order to maximize the professional benefits and career advancement opportunities available within the civil service.
The charge was given on July 28 by the Head of the Adult Education and Social Welfare Development Department, Mrs. Lilian Ejy-Akwuba, during the department’s meeting held at the Old Building Block.
The strategic meeting was convened to remind members of staff of their professional responsibilities and institutional obligations, with the objective of enhancing productivity, strengthening service delivery across all units, and improving overall performance within the local government.
Addressing the workforce, Mrs. Ejy-Akwuba emphasized the importance of regular attendance at work and strict adherence to official working hours, particularly among personnel in her department. She noted that discipline, punctuality, and commitment to duty are indispensable virtues for effective and efficient public service delivery.
Beyond her administrative directives, Mrs. Ejy-Akwuba also offered practical health guidance aimed at promoting staff well-being. She explained that the legs are often the first part of the body to experience the effects of aging due to the continuous strain of supporting body weight. She therefore encouraged workers to engage in regular leg exercises and other forms of physical activity to maintain good health, physical fitness, and optimum productivity.
Also speaking, the Head of the Adult Education Unit, Mrs. Moneke Okwukweka, expressed concern over reported cases of misconduct and insubordination among members of staff. She urged personnel across the department’s four constituent units the Information Unit, Social Welfare Unit, Adult Education Unit, and Community Development Unit to uphold the highest standards of discipline, professionalism, and respect for constituted authority.
Mrs. Okwukweka further reminded staff that exemplary conduct, integrity, and a commendable service record are critical to career progression, stressing that letters of recommendation and official references often play a significant role in determining future professional opportunities.
In her remarks, a staff member of the department, Mrs. Ozoekwe Nkeiru, condemned all forms of disrespect and abusive conduct directed at superiors in the workplace, whether expressed directly or indirectly. She urged staff to uphold the values of respect, discipline, and professionalism, reminding them that they could one day occupy leadership positions, including those of Head of Unit or Head of Department, where they would expect the same level of respect, cooperation, and professionalism from their subordinates.
Staff members were also urged to demonstrate greater commitment to their duties, uphold the core values and ethics of the civil service, and contribute meaningfully to the achievement of the local government’s service delivery goals.
