AWKA SOUTH WORKERS URGED TO REMAIN COMMITTED AS LGSC PLEDGES IMPROVED WELFARE

A member of the Local Government Service Commission (LGSC), Mr. Uche Okafor, has assured workers of Awka South Local Government Area that their welfare concerns are receiving attention, with efforts underway to improve working conditions and enhance service delivery.

Okafor, who represents local government workers on the commission, gave the assurance on Aug. 4 during an interactive meeting with the management and staff of the council at the Awka South Local Government Secretariat.

He said the meeting provided an opportunity to engage workers on welfare, work ethics and challenges affecting the local government service, noting that staff welfare remained central to efficient public service.

According to him, the commission is committed to advancing workers’ interests, adding that promotion exercises and recruitment to address manpower shortages are being pursued.

“I am pushing your concerns to ensure your work becomes easier and more effective. With the commissioner now in place, I believe our efforts will yield results. Promotions will soon be released to boost workers’ morale, while we also hope that recruitment will commence to strengthen the workforce,” he said.

Okafor observed that the shortage of personnel had compelled senior officers to perform duties meant for junior cadres, expressing optimism that the situation would improve.

He commended the Mayor of Awka South Local Government Area, Mr. Prince Chinedu Okafor, the management team and heads of departments for sustaining the council’s operations despite prevailing economic challenges.

The LGSC member urged workers to remain dedicated to their responsibilities, uphold professionalism and avoid actions capable of affecting productivity. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of the Head of Local Government Administration, Mr. Clement Ananti.

Responding, the Head of Administration and Personnel, Mrs. Nkem Usunkwo, thanked Okafor for the visit, describing it as reassuring and encouraging to the workforce.

She expressed confidence that the engagement had renewed workers’ hope for improved welfare, timely promotions and the implementation of outstanding staff entitlements.
