The Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA) has taken a significant step towards strengthening community-based HIV prevention and control efforts with the onboarding of 42 HIV Awareness Brigade (HAB) Supervisors drawn from the 21 Local Government Areas of the state.

The initiative forms part of the implementation of ANSACA’s State Strategic Transformation and Sustainability Plan (SSTSP) 2026–2028, aimed at expanding grassroots engagement and accelerating progress towards ending HIV transmission in the state.

Speaking during the onboarding session, the Executive Secretary of ANSACA, Dr. Nkem Okeke, emphasized the critical role of community structures in sustaining HIV response efforts, ensuring that awareness, prevention and testing services reach people at the grassroots.

The supervisors were equipped with a comprehensive understanding of the structure, objectives and operational framework of the HIV Awareness Brigade. They were also trained on their responsibilities, which include community mobilization, HIV education and awareness creation, advocacy, promotion of HIV testing services and effective engagement with residents across their respective Local Government Areas (LGA).

The strategic meeting also featured discussions on plans for the formal inauguration of the HIV Awareness Brigade, an event expected to be performed by the Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Mrs. Nonye Soludo, under her Healthy Living Initiative.

ANSACA described the onboarding as a major milestone in its drive to build a sustainable and community-owned HIV response system capable of delivering lasting impact across the state.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to achieving zero new HIV infections through strengthened partnerships, increased public awareness and active community participation in HIV prevention and control programmes.

Participants at the session expressed enthusiasm for the initiative and pledged to work diligently within their communities to promote HIV awareness, encourage testing, combat stigma and contribute to the realization of an HIV-free and healthier Anambra State.
