‎ANAMBRA TO ESTABLISH JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL CENTRE AS SOLUDO REAFFIRMS CHILD WELFARE COMMITMENT

By Azuka Nnabuife

‎The Anambra State Government marked the 2026 Children’s Day on Wednesday, May 27, with Governor Chukwuma Soludo reaffirming his administration’s commitment to child welfare, quality education, and inclusive development at the Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka.

‎The colourful ceremony brought together students, pupils, teachers, parents, and senior government officials featuring march past, cultural presentations, and advocacy for children’s rights under the theme, “Future Now: Promoting Inclusion for Every Nigerian Child.”

‎Speaking at the occasion, Governor Soludo announced plans to establish a Juvenile Correctional Centre in the state. He explained that the facility would ensure proper rehabilitation of minors and their separation from adult detention centres.

‎The Governor also cautioned parents against withdrawing children from school during school hours. He stressed that education remains free in Anambra State and warned that denying any child access to education constitutes a punishable offence.

‎He reiterated his administration’s determination to reduce the number of out-of-school children in the state to zero, noting that Anambra already records the lowest rate of out-of-school children in Nigeria.

‎Governor Soludo further stated that children found hawking or loitering during school hours would result in sanctions against their parents or guardians.

‎In her remarks, the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Onyekesi, commended Governor Soludo and the First Lady, Dr. Nonye Soludo, for their sustained efforts in advancing child welfare, promoting healthy living, and protecting vulnerable children across the state. She reaffirmed the government’s stance against child abuse, trafficking, child labour, and all forms of exploitation affecting children.

‎Also speaking, the Speaker of the Anambra Children’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Victory Ekwunife, expressed appreciation to the Governor for sustaining free education. She appealed for the speedy establishment of the Juvenile Correctional Centre to protect children from negative influences in adult detention facilities.
